Aims, Values and Ethos
Burnside Secondary School PRU is a school for some of the borough's most vulnerable young people. Our students are referred to us for a variety of reasons. They are often at risk of, or have been, permanently excluded from mainstream education. We support students at both KS3 and KS4 academically and behaviourally, focussing on supporting the students in their lessons to close the gaps in their learning and be ambitious in their academic or career aspirations. We believe it is never too late for any student and that each student has the potential to achieve and make positive contributions to their community.
Our support team are instrumental in helping students and their families develop on a personal level to address the reasons why the student was referred to us. They focus on our ethos of respect and kindness for all, encouraging students to take responsibility for their actions and recognise their potential. We are rightly proud at the work the team do in improving the life chances of our students.
Kindness and Respect
At Burnside we would like the whole school community to follow our ethos of kindness and respect. We feel it is as important for staff as well as students and represents our commitment to life long learning and a growth mindset.
Our values are the joint values of the Hawkswood Group of provisions seen below in our poster. By the time students leave us for either reintegration to mainstream or the next exciting step in their educational journey, we want our young people to be happy and educated with the desire and drive to succeed.
- Each student gets the individual care and attention they need to thrive and achieve their personal best with support from an experienced team of mentors and Learning coaches;
- Teachers bring learning alive and class sizes are kept small with 6-8 pupils in each group;
- Students participate in a broad range of enrichment, lifeskills and wellbeing activities activities including Swimming, Cooking, Boxing, Cricket, Music Therapy and Creative Arts.
- Everyone works together with the aim to sustain a happy, safe and orderly environment. We instil mutual respect between students and staff and have zero tolerance of bullying in any form; Kindness and respect are interwoven with teaching and learning.
- We promote high expectations and set standards of excellence using our growth mindset principles
Our learning ethos is at the heart of ensuring the achievement and success of all our students and this has been successful in ensuring that over the past few years Burnside leavers attain results in line with their peers nationally. Learning is highly structured in terms of the learning routines and we expect our students to respect and engage in, every lesson fully. The addition of experienced Learning Coaches and Mentors in each lesson supports every pupil to overcome barriers to learning.
This high level of structure ensures a consistent approach to how our students learn, and allows the inclusion of all learners, through a personalised approach to teaching, whilst at the same time creating the best possible environment which allows learning and teaching to thrive.
By focusing on the importance of independent as well as group learning, and developing both personal and thinking skills, students learn how to be resourceful, resilient, and reflective learners. This ensures that students are leaders of their own learning.
Democracy The Rule of Law Liberty Mutual Respect Tolerance
We actively promote and practise acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; the students develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
We enable students and staff to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence as well as encourage them to respect each other and other’s opinions. We encourage an understanding of right and wrong, taking responsibility, how we contribute to society and being tolerant and highly respectful of each other and our cultural traditions. This is further promoted in all aspects of our provision, celebration of achievement activities and pastoral time as well as across the curriculum as a whole.
At Burnside Secondary School PRU we are aiming to ensure all of our Pupils receive a well rounded and comprehensive approach to British Values in the following ways;
Enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
