Subject statement

The English Department at Burnside Secondary school is dedicated to fostering student success by providing enjoyable and engaging lessons in a safe nurturing environment.  Our aim is to maximise intellectual potential by setting challenging and achievable targets whilst simultaneously equipping students with the skills to express themselves imaginatively, creatively and confidently both in and outside the classroom.  We are dedicated to helping students gain a sense of heritage through a wide range of texts whilst developing skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. With high expectations and standards set, students are able to celebrate their successes and have fun whilst learning.

KS4:
Subject qualification course information

Burnside English Department is dedicated to ensuring the individual needs of KS4 pupils are met, to ensure they achieve some form of accreditation. The department’s schemes of work fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum in Year 11, covering AQA GCSE English Language and Literature, Functional skills Level 1&2 and AQA Unit awards. Year 10’s are also given the opportunity to study some texts offered on the National Curriculum and are given the opportunity to sit Functional Skills Level 1, ensuring their transition into mainstream school or college is as  smooth as possible. All work is differentiated ensuring the students are suitably challenged to fulfil and exceed in their preparations for GCSE's.
