Subject statement

At Burnside we aim to inspire pupils to develop the ability through Mathematics to become successful learners. We promote independent thinking. This is a transferable skill which enables the students to analyse difficult situations and produce creative solutions. An ability to tackle problems and master them can then be translated into every aspect of one’s life. It has been proved that success in Mathematics leads to a greater economic wellbeing in the future.

Mathematics is taught by teachers who are passionate about their subject. The students are set ambitious targets and students make rapid progress. We want students to be able to master Mathematics, which is an International Language. We see mastery as a key to students learning.

At Burnside, due to the fact students are taught in small groups, they have more indivualised attention than in mainstream.  In the Maths Dept. we are proud of the fact that we establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the students. The students come into classroom feeling secure knowing we are always there to support them.
