Outdoor Learning is used for academic, social, mental health, wellbeing, inter and intra-personal development at Hawkswood Primary. We believe that Outdoor Learning helps our pupils, of all backgrounds and abilities, to reflect and learn about themselves, each other and their environment.
We are fortunate enough to have access to an exceptional outside space which is surrounded by Epping Forest. We make use of this by having our daily PE lessons outside (including the Daily Mile), Nature walks incorporated into lessons, whole school forest walks and designated learning spaces with rich resources. Our Key Stage 1 Nurture Group's outside area was specifically designed to follow from classroom to outside space when our new school building was built. This enables our pupils to take their learning outside and offers them a variety of learning environments.
Woven throughout our teaching of the National Curriculum and emended Nurturing principles we aim for our outdoor learning experiences to be remembered for a lifetime. We Integrate learning and outdoor experiences, whether through play in the immediate grounds or adventures further afield and provide relevance and depth to the curriculum.
At Hawkswood Primary we teach all of our pupils that learning outdoors can be enjoyable, creative, challenging and adventurous. Some of our Pupils join the provision having never experienced the exploration of a Forest or outside space on such a large scale. We are fully aware of this so provide every pupil with the experiences to grow as confident and responsible citizens who value and appreciate the spectacular landscapes, natural heritage of our local area.
