Safeguarding continues to be paramount at Hawkswood Primary and we have an unwavering and relentless drive to continuously safeguard all of our pupils and staff alike.

We continue to excel in this area by remaining abreast with any changes to Safeguarding in education, termly training for staff as well as ensuring that Safeguarding is embedded into our curriculum.

Our robust Safeguarding measures are evident in our policies, systems and practices, training schedules, attendance, CPD, pupil and stakeholder voice and the day to day running of the school.

Safeguarding is an area of key importance to us and one that is regularly reviewed to ensure that we continue to meet all areas of need. As part of our ongoing holistic approach to safeguarding pupils against any threat to their health, safety and wellbeing, we support the teaching of traditional British values.  In addition, we have ensured that we have procedures in place to identify and report the potential for/ realisation of extremist views and radicalisation. Our Anti-Radicalisation and Extremism policy statement sets out our beliefs, strategies and procedures to protect pupils from being radicalised or exposed to extremism.

Student Confidentiality

Members of staff have a professional responsibility to share relevant information about the protection of students with other professional agencies. This can include Social Care, Early Help Services, Police and other agencies that may support your child. A member of staff will, therefore, never promise confidentiality where safeguarding is concerned.

The school aims to safeguard students against:

  • Abuse
  • Bullying
  • Exploitation
  • Discrimination
  • Radicalisation

Abuse

Abuse is about the misuse of power and control that one person has over another. It can be defined as “…a violation of an individual’s human and civil rights by any other person or persons which results in significant harm.”

Bullying

Bullying is usually defined as behaviour that is: repeated; intended to hurt someone either physically or emotionally; often aimed at certain groups, for example because of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.  Bullying is not tolerated at The Quay School and will be addressed immediately that a case is reported.

It takes many forms and can include: physical assault, teasing, making threats, name calling, cyberbullying – bullying via mobile phone or online (for example email, social networks and instant messenger).

Exploitation

Child exploitation refers to the use of children for someone else’s advantage, gratification or profit often resulting in unjust, cruel and harmful treatment of the child. These activities are to the detriment of the child’s physical or mental health, education, moral or social-emotional development. It covers situations of manipulation, misuse, abuse, victimisation, oppression or ill-treatment.

Discrimination

Discrimination is when a person is treated unfairly because they think the person is different. It can happen because of their age, sex, religion, race, disability, gender or another reason.

Radicalisation

Radicalisation is the action or process of causing someone to adopt radical positions on political or social issues.

Safeguarding against radicalisation is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability. PREVENT is the name given to a national strategy which aims to stop people from becoming involved with violent extremists or supporting terrorism.

Staying Safe Online

Being safe online means individuals are protecting themselves and others from online harms and risks which may jeopardise their personal information, lead to unsafe communications or even effect their mental health and wellbeing.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

As well as increasing a person’s opportunity and choices in life, promoting mental health and wellbeing as a core role helps students: develop protective factors from mental ill-health, provide them with skills and confidence to self-seek help for early intervention.

LADO – Local Authority Designated Officer

The LADO is the person who must be informed of concerns and allegations made against staff or volunteers in school. Please note it may also be appropriate to contact the LADO if an allegation is made against someone who is closely associated with a staff member.

The individual may have:

  • behaved in a way that has harmed or may have harmed a child
  • possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child
  • behaved towards a child or children in a way that indicates he or she would pose a risk of harm to children

What you can  do...

If you have concerns that your child or a child you know is being groomed by gangs or being exploited criminally or sexually you need to report this so that you can get help for them.
There is help on offer from the school and Local Authority.

Which ever reporting method you choose, you will be guided through the process and offered appropriate support along the way. The Local Authority  convene a monthly panel to discuss new cases and allocate support to children and families.  A member of the Hawkswood Group Safeguarding Team attends this panel. Yours and your child's information will be kept confidential between professional partners only, on a need to know basis for safeguarding reasons.

Safeguarding concerns about Staff

We have a clear procedure n place for reporting safeguarding concerns about staff. This is shown in our Policy section of the website in the form of a flow chart, and is also contained within our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.

Anyone can contact the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) regarding safeguarding concerns about staff members or any professional working with children, including concerns about Foster Carers and care home staff.
